VAH 50th Anniversary Open House Celebration
September 29, 2012
Fun at Texas Steakhouse!
Pam Holdren has been our Office Manager since August 1977 (she's been here longer than Dr. Poage!). She has been married to her husband, Jerry for 38 years. They share their home with their 5 four-legged children. Four are cats named Josie, Sprite, Nada and Griffen. Their newest addition is a Saluki puppy, MoodyBlue, who hails from Dallas, Texas. Jerry has informed him he now lives in a Washington Redskin household. Pam enjoys flower gardening, reading and going to the beach as often as she can.
Denise Poage, the Assistant Office Manager, co-developed this web page and graphically made it a better place. She is married to Dr. Poage and has two wonderful children, a Whippet angel named "Amanda", an awesome terrier mix rescue named "Spirit" (see her story on "The Spirit Fund" page), a Wire Hair Terrier mix named "Amber Grace" (a souvenir from a vacation to Belize - a stray with big pitiful eyes who knew how to use them:) and three Miniature Horses named Dinky, Sugar and TJ. Even though she's not old enough to be a grandmother (ha, ha), her grandson is the light of her life She absolutely loves her job and believes her co-workers are THE BEST...especially her handsome boss!
Debbie Troutt joined the staff of VAH in October of 2005. She has been married to her husband, Rick, for 32 years. She is blessed with two wonderful children, Adam and Britt, their spouses and two grandchildren. She has 3 K-9 kids; Slane, a Great Dane: Evan, a handsome Dalmatian and Fiona, a Silky Terrier (and even a couple of grand-dogs and cats). Besides family, one of her greatest joys is serving in her church.
One of our wonderful hostesses is Barbara (Bee Jay) Johnson. She joined our family in September of 2000, and says she has "loved every minute of it"! Bee Jay was born in Roanoke, but spent many years in the D.C. Metropolitan area. She retired from the D.C. Police Department there, and now "polices" our lobby! She makes sure everyone who walks through the door feels WELCOME...2 and 4 legged! She is definitely a "people person" and has a blast meeting all of her furry friends and their parents. But most of all she likes working for the best boss in town. She has a cat named Chester and a little Chihuahua named Webster who keep her hopping! She also enjoys golf, football and reading.
Brandi Roark (LVT) has been a member of the Valley Animal Hospital family since 2001. She graduated from Blue Ridge Community College in May '09 with a degree in Veterinary Technology. She has 2 cats, "Merlin" and "Elric" and a husband which take up most of her free time.
Mary Mountcastle, one of our wonderful hostesses, has been with VAH since July 2003. She is a senior citizen that loves to keep active and loves animals, making Valley Animal Hospital a perfect job for her. She lost her pet Poodle of 16 years and has not replaced her yet because she still has a big spot in her heart. She currently shares her life with four birds. Her three African Greys are named "Bailey" and "Sugar" and "Sterling" and her Blue Front Amazon is named "Chico". They rule the house but let Mary live there because they need a maid.
Kristie Frank (LVT) obtained her degree at Johnson College in Scranton PA. She became part of the VAH family in the spring of 2000. She has a big interest in exotic animal medicine with reptiles being her favorite. She met a VAH client who shared her love for reptiles, and they had a Valley Animal Hospital wedding. They currently share their home with a bearded dragon and a dog named "Buffy", and their two little girls named Addison and Gracie!. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling to reptile shows with her husband and road cruising for snakes.
Sara Buchanan joined the VAH family in July, 2007 after retiring from Norfolk Southern Railway's Accounting Department. She has four Irish Setters that have all finished their championship in the show ring (except for the youngest boy "Liam" who is almost there)! They all enjoy a pampered life but Josh and Liam still enjoy competing in the show ring. Sara loves Saddlebred horses, UVA football and basketball.
Karie MacMackin has also been a part of our VAH family since July 2007. She enjoys her job and loves coming to work every day. Her family includes her awesome husband, Greg, and two boys, JT and Liam, and a "furry" son named Kyle.
Wendy Harman, LVT started working at VAH in August, 2004 as a kennel attendant and graduated with her licensed veterinary technician degree in June, 2009. She is married to her best friend and high school sweetheart. Their fur babies consist of a Golden Retriever mix named "Shadow" and a cool cat named "D.J". She drives to work from Rocky Mount everyday because "Valley Animal Hospital is the BEST"! They had their first child in December 2012 (It's a boy).
Amber Dickerson joined the VAH team in June 2008. She has a Yorkshire Terrier name "Icky" who keeps her on her toes and a rabbit named Thumper! Amber says working at Valley Animal Hospital is a great experience but the best part of working at VAH is "the sense of family". Outside of work, Amber enjoys shopping, playing with her animals and "mud-bogging". She also has Daniel, her new fiance.
David Jobe comes to VAH in May, 2008 with 25 years experience in animal care (Yay!), having worked for both the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Mill Mountain Zoo. He shares his home with two dogs, a cat and a number of birds, snakes. In his spare time, he is active with a number of animal organizations and loves to travel.
Meghan Lively has been with Valley Animal Hospital since 2005. She works full time at the roanoke city Police Department, but loves Valley Animal so much she wroks here part time! Currently, she has one fur-family member, a cat named "Smokey". In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time with her beautiful niece McKensie, and is a New York Yankees fanatic!
Leigh Basham graduated as an LVT from Murray State University in Murray, KY in 2011, came directly to Valley Animal Hospital as an intern and is now happily employeed as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. She holds a special place in her heart for her two boxers "Harvey" and "Copper", her horse "Corona", cat, bird and many other small reptiles and amphibians. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering in the community. She couldn't imagine working anywhere other than Valley!
Aaron Parker joined VAH in September 2012 making him the newest addition. He says that out of personal passions in his life, animal care is very close to his heart. The opportunity to work at one of the best clinics in the Roanoke Valley couldn't be a greater blessing. In his spare time, he goes to church, engulfs himself in reading, working out, sketching/painting, guitar and hiking whenever he gets the chance. He has a 6 year old Red Nose Pitbull named Sugar that he rescued from a terrible home. Little did he know she would be the best dog he's ever had and returns the love ten fold and so unconditionally.
Emily Turner joined Valley Animal Hospital in August of 2012. Ever since she was a little girl she has wanted to be a veterinarian. She grew up around animals and her family currently has 2 dogs: a 10 month old Golden Retriever named Duke and a Border Collie mix named Toby. They are so crazy but their cute faces help them get away with anything. Although her tenure is recent, she loves her work with animals and comments that the staff is so friendly and welcoming.
Debby Spencer is our groomer and began working at VAH in June 2012. She thoroughly enjoys being a part of the VAH team. After serving as Administrative Assistant/Computer Specialist at several jobs over the last 25 years, she decided she would prefer to work the next 20 years doing something she really enjoyed. She completed a year long certification course through Animal Behavior College and became a Certified Pet Groomer in May 2012.
She has been married 31 years with 2 sons, 1 granddaughter and 1 grandson. She owns Buddy, a male Miniature Schnauzer and Abbey, a female Akbash (a Turkish Herding Dog similar to a Great Pyrenees).
